Clay Shirky gives the keynote presentation at SF 2008

Clay Shirky has been a leading commentator on the evolution of technology and society since before there was a Web. In the 1990s he was the original Professor of New Media in the Media Studies department at Hunter College. He’s also been an activist on behalf of freedom online for the Electronic Frontiers Foundation, including appearing as an expert witness in a case that helped overturn the Communications Decency Act in 1996. And Clay’s also probably one of the few people in Health 2.0 whose undergraduate degree is in art and whose first “career” was spent in theater.

In recent years Clay has become very involved in health care technology, including working as a consultant with the Markle Foundation. Just this August (with Carol Diamond) he published a controversial Health Affairs article warning the health care IT establishment against the dangers of “magical thinking.”

In his day job, Clay consults widely with several blue-chip organizations and teaches at NYU’s graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program about how our networks shape our culture and vice-versa. But he’s best known for his 2008 book: Here Comes Everybody. The book is the definitive explanation of how new technology allows us to organize without organizations, and the societal impact of these new technologies—which is after all what much of Health 2.0 is about.

Four leading players from across the healthcare system tell us what they see as the business future for Health 2.0.

In 2007, we introduced Health 2.0. Last spring we looked at connectivity between patients and providers. But you’ve asked loud and clear to hear about the business future of Health 2.0, so we assembled four leading players from across the healthcare system to tell us what they see as the business future for Health 2.0. And yes they all have large checkbooks.

Can consumer aggregators turn themselves into serious healthcare destinations?

Most of the 170 million Americans going online for health information still start at one of “the big three”, while WebMD still leads the health vertical pack. But things have changed in the last year. Google and Microsoft now both have specific consumer health offerings and health plans are trying to become serious online destinations. Can the consumer aggregators turn themselves into serious healthcare destinations? And how are they working with partners to extend their reach and services?
