Aetna continues to evolve from an insurance carrier to a health solutions company, driving increased consumer engagement in their health care and empowering people to live healthier lives. Aetna is focused on helping make health care work better for everyone and harnessing technology to empower consumers to better manage their health.

The increasing use of smartphones, tablets, and smart devices to access health information provides an opportunity for consumers to have the necessary information when they are ready and able to make a health care or health-related decision. In fact, a recent survey conducted by the Altimeter Group on behalf of Aetna found that nearly half of Americans believe accessing and managing health information from a mobile device would lead to better interactions and outcomes.

Description

CarePass
In March 2012 Aetna launched an open digital platform, CarePass Platform, which seeks to improve convenience for consumers in a fragmented healthcare system. The Platform enables consumers to share information across participating mobile applications, as the consumer specifically permits.

The CarePass Platform currently offers an updated iTriage® application, a leading mobile application that helps consumers research symptoms and conditions and find healthcare providers that matches their needs. The CarePass Platform also integrates to a suite of market-leading mobile MapMYFitness apps. Aetna will continue to add market-leading apps to the Platform across fitness, nutrition, behavioral, pharmacy and other key health categories.

Developer Community Launch
In addition to consumers, Aetna is supporting third party developers with data and services, to unleash their creativity in developing apps to make health care more convenient. The CarePass developer portal will include a broad set of resources, including API management; documentation and support; and multiple communication channels for developers and subject matter experts.

You can register for the CarePass Developer Portal at https://developer.carepass.com/.

The first place winner will receive $75,000 and the second place winner will be awarded $25,000. Winners of the challenge will own the app, intellectual property, and the rights to commercialize the solution. Winners will be required to integrate the app to the CarePass platform.

Medication Reminder Developer Challenge
Aetna invites software developers to access the CarePass APIs and create an innovative solution to help consumers remember to take their medication. The application should have the following features, in addition to other features identified by challenge teams:

Required

  • Enable consumers to enter medications
  • Remind consumers to take their medications
  • Allow the user to enter their medication history (direct entry or importing)
  • Provide the cost of medications and lower cost alternatives where appropriate

Preferred

  • Provide information to help answer common medication questions
