Background

When your body talks, BodyMedia listens. BodyMedia has been unlocking and deciphering secrets of the body since 1999. BodyMedia is the pioneer in developing wearable body monitoring systems designed to help people lose weight, improve performance, and lead healthier lives. Our patented multi-sensor technology provides continuous body-monitoring that tracks physical activity levels, calories expended and sleep patterns. What sets BodyMedia technology apart is our validated accuracy, our clinically proven outcomes and our FDA status as a Class II medical device. The BodyMedia FIT system includes a wearable Armband that collects, in aggregate, hundreds of millions of user data points per day and an online Activity Manager where users input their body parameters, set personal goals and log food intake.

One of things that makes us different is our close relationships with partners, such as Sprint and Panasonic.

  • The BodyMedia Pack on Sprint ID Devices is a complete health and wellness mobile experience for owners of Android™ devices with Sprint ID. The pack is suite of preloaded custom applications also lets users track food intake, assess calorie balance and create personalized workouts along with a customized bundle of widgets, applications, wallpapers, ringtones and other content for Android devices.
  • An example of the versatility of our data is the BodyMedia app for Panasonic’s line of VIERA Connect™ IPTVs. This app for Panasonic’s VIERA integrates body monitoring technology with the TV to enable real time health and wellness management. Merging data returned by the API with the real time information from the Bluetooth® enabled Armband BW, the app will allow users to watch their information update in real time while they watch TV or play video games.

The Obesity Epidemic
Obesity rates among citizens in the United States (US) have exploded, particularly in the last 30 years. The total number of obese individuals has skyrocketed since 1980 and at this point obesity has become a nationwide epidemic. According to data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in 1994 no state in the Union contained a population of obese individuals greater than 20%. By 2009, in contrast, the only state with an obesity rate under 20% was Colorado. This staggering growth negatively impacts millions of Americans and their families and threatens to undermine the stability of the US healthcare system. Obesity is directly linked to multiple debilitating health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and stroke, and these afflictions place a massive cost burden on the healthcare system. In 2008, obesity related healthcare costs amounted to 9% of total spending, or $147B, versus $78.5B in 1998. Furthermore, type II diabetes totaled $174B in 2010 and diabetes’ correlation with obesity is well documented. These massive costs place unsustainable pressure on the healthcare system and are spiraling out of control.

Description

Create an application that allows self-forming groups (family, friends, clubs, etc) to make long term positive decisions to improve weight / fitness and potentially compare progress. The application should be motivational, fun and ideally use techniques to subconsciously create long term behavior change toward a healthier lifestyle. As part of the challenge, define a roadmap of how the application can evolve over the next few years. Teams should creatively use the BodyMedia API to create a motivational and fun web and/or mobile application, game, visualization or Facebook app that actively engages and intrigues users to promote healthier actions.

Examples:

  • Create a web and/or mobile game that monitors an individual’s BodyMedia data and puts them in comparison/competition with groups (family, co-workers, etc.).
  • Create a web application that aggregates BodyMedia data at a community level to bring awareness and action to individuals, policymakers and other stakeholders.
