It will also build on Healthvault’s robust synchronization with pharmacies to import medication regimens, alert consumers about interactions, and use data visualization to help identify areas for improving adherence. To build the framework of an app with these capacities, clinicians from the Center for Consumer Health Informatics Research at Nova Southeastern University partnered with the Windows Phone 7 Evangelists from Techmind.

    Background

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) describes Chronic Condition Management as “The public health challenge of the 21st century”. Examples of chronic conditions include hypertension, asthma/COPD, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and about 15 others. Typically, a person experiences a normal lifestyle with little day-to-day awareness of their disease promoting behaviors. Significantly, chronic conditions, if treated early, are manageable. Unfortunately, oftentimes low-cost treatment is ignored or delayed until an acute incident necessitates costly healthcare intervention. Although such conditions are life-long and life-style inhibiting, treatment regimens are effective and several conditions are preventable.

Better care and better outcomes for more people – it’s what we’re all striving for in the health industry. Microsoft works every day with health organizations, communities, a partners around the world to help realize this goal.

There are over a billion Windows users in the world today and they are all moving in to a new world where computing is not just about a PC at home. Consumers may use a laptop at home, travel to work using a mobile device, arrive at work where they have a completely different experience on a desktop PC, then finally at home in the evening they may use a tablet device while relaxing on the couch. What does this shift in computing device usage mean for patients managing the health of themselves and their families?

Windows 8 provides consumers with a new modern interface that follows users wherever they are, at home, at work, or on the go. However as users use more devices and a growing set of health & wellness applications this provides a new challenge for users and their health information. Microsoft HealthVault is in a unique position to help address this. HealthVault helps users gather, store and share health information and puts consumers at the center of their health information. With the launch of Windows 8, HealthVault launched a Windows 8 SDK which will help app builders leverage all the benefits of HealthVault in new and modern Windows 8 applications that have the potential to reach millions of users. It has yet to be seen what the power of these two platforms can mean for the healthcare industry and patient engagement and we’d love to find out!

    Description

The Re-imagining Consumer Health With Windows 8 And Healthvault Challenge asks developers to create a Windows Store application that meets two key criteria:

    • The application is a modern Windows Store app that runs both on Windows 8 and Windows RT
    • The app uses either the HealthVault Windows 8 SDK or uses the HealthVault web APIs to send or receive data from HealthVault

This challenge is designed to help create a next generation health management app for consumers trying to stay healthy or for consumers actively managing a health condition. Both Windows 8 and HealthVault have unique features to help more deeply engage users and engagement is the key to optimal health outcomes. As a result, we want developers to explore how the combination of Windows 8 and HealthVault features can create both more engaging and more integrated health solutions.

Participants will need to package their application (as detailed on dev.windows.com) and send the application package to Win8HealthDesv@microsoft.com. Specific instructions for app package submission are here.

The top 3 winning applications determined by a panel judges comprised of Microsoft employees, will be awarded prizes as outlined in this document. In addition, the grand prize winning application (1st prize winner) will become one of Microsoft preferred Window 8 partners which entitles to winner to enhanced design and development support from Microsoft in order to help the winning developer create a release quality application that can be submitted to the Windows Store. Throughout this process the winning developer will receive detailed design and development feedback from Windows 8 engineers and designers to assure the development of high quality application (this is the same process all top Windows 8 applications go through during their development process to maximize marketing and promotional opportunities). Please note, that this is a separate process from the Windows 8 app certification process which is required for all applications that are published to the Windows store. After the feedback review process is completed all bugs designated as “Must Fix” must be rectified by the developer in order to be considered for marketing and promotion by Microsoft. Finally upon final submission and certification to the Windows Store the app will be marketed by Microsoft through the appropriate Windows channels as determined by the scenario and audience that the application is targeted to. The final marketing channels used are at the sole discretion of Microsoft. This marketing and promotion includes but is not limited to promotion in the Windows Store.

Throughout the challenge, Windows 8 Technical evangelists will provide support to participants via email to Win8HealthDevs@microsoft.com.

All developers who are able to complete their integration with HealthVault (i.e. Go-Live; http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/healthvault/bb962148.aspx ) by the end of current year (2013) would receive a waiver of the standard Go-Live fee (~$20k) in addition to a waiver of two years of HealthVault record access fees (HealthVault fees are graduated based upon volume but range from 1-4 US dollars per year per record).

The Challenge is open to any individual 18 years old or older as of their time of entry, and any organizational entity (corporation, non-profit, etc.) operating lawfully anywhere in any country or territory, except for Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria and North Korea. Employees of Sponsor, Administrator, each of their affiliates, and/or any other individual or entity associated with the development, judging, or administration of the Challenge as well as members of such persons' immediate families (spouses, children, siblings, parents), and persons living in the same household as such persons, whether or not related, are not eligible to participate in the Challenge.
