Keas, a social game for the workplace that promotes wellness and healthy living, announced that it had raised an additional $6.5 million in Series B financing led by Atlas Venture and Ignition Partners. KEAS offers a corporate wellness and morale program that integrates social networking and social gaming.

Healthyroads.com was awarded with a 2011 Platinum eHealthcare Leadership award. The Healthyroads.com website provides its 6 million members personal health assessments, exercise and meal plans, numerous fitness trackers, fitness club discounts and a personal health record. The American Telemedicine Association announced a legislative proposal calling for the federal government to expand Medicaid coverage to expand the use of telemedicine for Medicaid enrollees with high-risk pregnancies and neonatal care needs. ATA’s proposal is based on the University of Arkansas’ ANGELS program, which has managed a birthing network for nearly 10 years. The ATA commissioned an independent study by Avalere Health to evaluate the proposal, concluding that such a change could save Medicaid up to $186 million over the next 10 years.

A new study by SureScripts found that e-prescribing led to a 7% increase in the rate of patient prescription pick-up compared to traditional pen-and-pad methods. E-prescribing software lists cost information, revealing whether a drug is covered by a patient’s formulary and at what tier of co-pay, facilitating appropriate prescribing.

While attending the Colorado Hospital Association meeting in Vail, Brad Cochennet, CEO of Pagosa Springs Medical Center, began experiencing stroke-like symptoms. Brought into a nearby emergency room without an on-site neurologist, the Colorado hospital CEO and advocate of telehealth implementation was saved by his own telehealth investment when a telehealth consult was used to promptly diagnose his condition.

Physicians at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Medical Center will be the first to use IBM’s Watson supercomputer system to help diagnose medical conditions and select treatments. In September, Wellpoint (which is paying for the pilot) announced a deal with IBM to develop a commercial application of Watson for its members.

This week, physician offices in Ohio, and Mississippi used Direct messaging to communicate with one another through the statewide health information exchanges in those states. This represents the first time in which direct protocol for secure messaging has been used to exchange health data across state lines. THe technology came from Aetna subsidiary Medicity.

CMS selects its final list of 23 pioneer ACO sites. We’ll be looking for innovative technology implementation examples within the pioneer sites for future health IT models.

New Chicago based healthcare start-up accelerator, HealthBox, announces its inaugural class of participants. The accelerator provides $50,000 seed funding, expert advice and office space in exchange for 7% equity in participating companies.
