This session demonstrated how patient centered tools, technologies and design are helping patients take control over their health for better outcomes and communication with providers. Leaders in the patient movement, Maria Gjerpe and Charlie Young addressed the audience with their research and work in the field of patient empowerment and shared their stories of successfully engaging the health care system as a patient.
By collecting patient wisdom and solutions, PatientOpinon, seeks to leverage the patient voice to inspire change and improve health care in England. Since launching, 12% of health care stories submitted to the site have inspired health care change, demonstrating that the patient has the power to change the inadequacies they have experienced during treatment.
Paul Hodgkin, PatientOpinion | UK
Paul has been a GP for 25 years and he still practices for a day a week as a salaried GP. But in 2006 he founded PatientOpinion, a site where Brits tell the story of their hospital experiences. Perhaps even more remarkably he’s managed to get both the NHS and trusts (hospitals) to pay to find out what people are saying about them.
