Tim Kelsey’s Keynote

Tim Kelsey’s keynote, “Personalised Health and Care 2020: Using Data and Technology to Transform Outcomes for Patients and Citizens” examined how better use of technology has the power to transform the quality and costs of health and care services, and the work currently underway by the NHS to giving people ownership of ALL their own medical data.

From Big to Smart to Open, Just How We Like Data

Tim Kelsey opened with a Keynote before Health 2.0 Netherlands chapter leader Eugene Borukhovich kicked off our data panel. He spoke with experts and showed demos that frame national, entrepreneurial, and patient-based efforts to create open data portals and increase access across the spectrum.

Double Keynote: Big, Smart, and Open – just how we like data!

Tim Kelsey and Geraint Lewis of NHS England gave a call to action in their double keynote this November in London, England. Kelsey examined how data has the power to articulate the patient voice to make England’s health care system safer and more sustainable. Lewis followed Kelsey to show the audience how Care.Data, a new data driven program will address the shortcomings of England’s HES, Hospital Episode Statistics, program. With Care.Data’s implementation, patient data will be collected from all providers of NHS health care to create a complete history and this information will be easily accessible to patients. The hope is that Care.Data will allow patients, providers, innovators, and entrepreneurs with the ability to analyze health patterns, audit hospital quality and prevention programs, investigate outbreaks, compare health statistics, and describe outcomes to make England a healthier and more empowered country.

The New Environment for Better Health Care Decisions: Full Session

The new health care environment is continually moving into the hands of the individual consumer.  The New Environment for Better Health Care Decisions, co-moderated by Indu Subaiya and Matthew Holt, addressed the issues and benefits of the integration of consumer data with clinical experiences.  Ryan Beckland from Validic introduced the session as a sponsor. Speakers included Susannah Fox, Tim Kelsey, Neal Sofian, Jamie Heywood, Amy Cueva, David Whitlinger, and Lygeia Ricciardi.  Demos exemplifying this shift included Dossia, Fitbit, Mana Health, and HealthifyMe.

NHS: Announcement

Tim Kelsey, National Director for Patients and Information, represented the NHS  who is putting 1 billion pounds on the table in a technology fund to incentivize hospitals to make sense of digital data and revolutionize health care.  Kelsey called to developers to rise to this occasion and improve the health care system through technology.

Tim Kelsey is a Cambridge-educated British journalist who co-founded Dr. Foster Intelligence, an organization which publishes comparative hospital and population health quality data, and offers analytic services to UK hospitals. Following the success of Dr. Foster Intelligence, he was offered a post at the UK Department of Health as Britain’s first Executive Director of Transparency and Open Data.  He demonstrated the new pilot, Care Connect, to increase health care customer service by organizing and responding efficiently to complaints.  This pilot is the start of unleashing the power of the people.
